About the Author
Early Journey & Literary Awakening
Fran Hillyer’s journey to understanding the complexities of the human heart commenced not in the psychology lab but among the pages as she dove into the world of literature. Fran was originally on her way to a graduate degree in psychology when she had an epiphany. She realized that the most profound insights into the human condition weren’t to be found in science but in stories. From that moment, Fran dedicated her life to literature, immersing herself in poetry, novels, and myths.

Turning to Storytelling
While teaching and literature connected Fran profoundly to stories, it wasn’t enough. She wanted to create her own. Fran was fascinated by the power of myth, and her attention was diverted to one of the most enigmatic figures in Christian tradition: the Virgin Mary.
Inspiration Behind Immah
Fran was captivated by Mary’s story, particularly the mystery and ambiguity surrounding her girlhood and why she was chosen to be the mother of Jesus. Inspired by these questions, Fran penned her moving religious novel Immah, which tells the story of Mary’s life from eight until the annunciation. The book offers readers a rare glimpse into her education, family, and the events that shaped her divine destiny.
Literary Perspective & Themes
In Immah, readers can see Fran’s passion for giving voice to the often-silent figures in history. Fran challenges traditional portrayals of maternal life in literature, questioning why, until the second wave of feminism in the 1970s, mothers were frequently depicted as objects of pity, anger, or veneration rather than fully realized individuals.
Research & Character Depth
Her extensive research on the bias toward heroic narratives informed her portrayal of Mary as a complex, deeply human character, which allowed her to not only admire the Madonna but also understand and love her more.
